NEUROFEEDBACK

A scientific perspective with a goal in mind and an end in sight.

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a process of learning and training the brain.

By mapping the brain’s electrical activity, we obtain an roadmap of how a client’s brain functions and we use this information to create an individualized and customized treatment protocols.

Neurofeedback addresses all areas of your health and well-being so you can access the answers within you and move from a state of surviving to thriving. Neurofeedback is a highly effective treatment that yields longitudinal and positive results, helping you shift your mindset so you can go from feeling stuck to finally feeling free.

Your higher self deserves to function optimally and be well.

The Science Behind Neurotherapy

Our brains communicate through brainwaves, which affect our perception, mood, sleep, and state of being. Brainwaves are patterns of neural activity that create thoughts, behaviors, actions, and emotions. By measuring the electrical activity in the brain, we can identify when brainwaves are too strong or weak, impacting symptoms. Neurofeedback helps the brain adjust its activity, improving brainwave power and returning to an adaptive state. This process is like updating software on a computer to ensure proper functioning. Consistent updates help the brain learn and regulate physiology, promoting overall well-being.

What to Know About Neurofeedback Services

Embracing Personalization for Optimal Results

At LUXNEURO, we use neurofeedback to treat clients of all ages, integrating other approaches as needed. With qEEG, we assess brainwave patterns and their impact on the body and mind. We then target imbalances to enhance adaptability, efficiency, and overall well-being. Our personalized treatment plans consider each client's unique needs and are based on their specific qEEG brain map. We utilize various tools and methods such as heart math, heart rate variability, functional diagnostic nutrition, therapy, psychoeducation, mind movies, and neurochange solutions to further support their progress.

We also offer intensives for clients who want to achieve their end goal faster. Think of neurofeedback as simply, learning. Daily learning yields quicker and more lasting results. This is a great option for clients who are more constricted with time or are coming in from out of state. Intensives allow us to create a personalized plan to match a client’s pace, providing them with more freedom and flexibility to accommodate busy lives.

Every life experience takes root in our brains, shaping us and making us who we are. So when we get to the root, everything can change and we understand how to move forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Complimentary Discovery Call:
All new clients start with a private consultation, which includes a preliminary discussion about your needs and how our services will help you. This time is extremely valuable so we can learn as much as possible about you. We discuss, in detail, our neurofeedback process, and how we can meet your expectations.

    Collect qEEG Brain Map Data:
The next step is scheduling an appointment to collect brainwave data for a Quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG), also known as a brain map. This will provide us with the data we need to create your overall treatment strategy, allowing us to visualize the baseline activity of your brain and evaluate the appropriate treatment protocols based on your results. The duration of this appointment is approx. 60 minutes.

    Review qEEG Brain Map:
Once the data has been processed into the qEEG report, we have a roadmap to understand how your brain functions and the steps to take moving forward. A follow-up appointment is scheduled to go over your results and discuss treatment strategies. During this appointment, you will learn about how your brainwaves correlate with your symptoms that brought you to neurofeedback. You will also learn where your brain is doing well.

    Begin Neurofeedback Training:
Neurofeedback training, at its core, is the process of learning. During neurofeedback sessions, your brain learns to produce less or more of the brainwaves that we target, in the locations that need more or less power of certain brainwaves. By placing electrodes on the scalp (a non-invasive process), the brainwaves are read and the brain receives feedback through visual, tactile, or auditory feedback. This allows the brain to self-adjust. With repetition, the brain learns to regulate itself, leading to improved symptoms.

    Integration:
Clients have the option of participating in either 45-minute sessions of a check-in and neurofeedback training, or 60-minute neurofeedback and counseling sessions of half counseling and half neurofeedback. This is the best of both worlds! Neurofeedback sessions or intensives occur once to five times per week. Optimal results for neurofeedback typically require between thirty to sixty sessions. Regardless of training frequency, all clients are evaluated consistently throughout their training to track shifts in symptomology and experience.

    Graduation:
When we reach a point where we and our clients feel that all goals have been met and our clients feel like their quality of life has improved, they can graduate from treatment. At LuxNeuro, there is an end goal in mind. We help clients get to a healthy place in life with the right practical and applicable tools. Once our clients graduate, the results are longitudinal and they don’t need to come back or additional therapy unless they have new circumstances that cause dysregulation. Others may come back as they age for a tune up.

  • Neurofeedback is a process of optimizing your brain, whether through making various brainwaves less overpowering or more powerful. All of our brainwaves have a function that serves us however, when they are too powerful or underpowered, they can correlate with symptoms that cause impairment in our lives. Neurofeedback allows the brain to see what it is doing and then adjust, just as you might adjust an out-of-place hair or crooked collar when looking at yourself in a mirror. At its core, neurofeedback is a process of learning, much like learning to read or ride a bike. With repetition, the brain learns the skill, becoming something it doesn't need to relearn unless there is a dramatic change that alters its state. This is the short version. Educating the client and quality of care are one of the most important values LuxNeuro holds. It is very important that the client feels supported and educated throughout their treatment. In general, when your physiology is regulated, you can access what you know is in alignment for you to do. Neurofeedback is the key to this access.

  • Yes, we offer neurofeedback and counseling services separately and together. Grounded in neuroscience and psychology, neurofeedback and counseling are a union between the conscious and subconscious parts of us, which help us to understand what’s happening externally in ways we’re aware of and what’s going on internally in ways we’re not yet aware of. This work will give you the transformational life and educational tools, and counseling support, you need to access the wisdom that already lies within you to begin the process of healing.

  • Neurofeedback treatment is considered to be a safe practice and is associated with minimal risk. The most common side effect is drowsiness which only lasts one or two sessions as the brain acclimates to treatment. We have this information detailed in our Disclosures and Informed Consent for our practice.

  • Different brain waves are associated with different states.  Brain waves are measured in Hertz (Hz) (cycles per second) and can change across a wide range of variables. Brainwaves are associated with positive functions as well as negative symptoms. For example, when slower brain waves are dominant we can feel sluggish, inattentive and scattered, and can feel depressed or develop insomnia.  When higher frequencies abound, we are engaged in critical thinking, hyper-alertness or anxiety, but can also result in nightmares, hyper-vigilance and impulsive behavior.

Brainwaves operate like an orchestra. If a specific brainwave is too prominent in the brain, it can cause disruption and inefficiency. Likewise, if a specific brainwave isn't active enough, we aren't able to access the benefits it can provide to us. Imbalances of brainwaves can be caused by a variety of different domains. Genetics, trauma, stress, lifestyle and behavioral habits can all play a role in how our brainwaves communicate.

The different types of brainwaves include: delta, theta, alpha, lobeta, beta, hibeta and gamma (gamma is currently of limited clinical value, as it is argued that it cannot be effectively measured using current EEG technology).

  • The different types of brainwaves include: delta, theta, alpha, lobeta, beta, hibeta and gamma (gamma is currently of limited clinical value, as it is argued that it cannot be effectively measured using current EEG technology). All of our brainwaves are needed and have a specific function that serves us. But we need them to be at the right time for the conditions of the environment, in the correct location of the brain for optimal functioning, and in the power needed. The Positive Function is where the brainwave is seen at the correct area of the brain for the demands of the environment and also at the right time and power. The Negative Symptom Correlation is when the brainwaves are either too powerful or under powered in the brain and at the incorrect time for the demand of the environment. Below are the brainwaves individually explained more in depth:

    Delta (1-3 Hz)

    Positive Function
Deep and dreamless sleep, cellular repair, healing the body, the cellular ‘cleaning crew’, unconsciousness, a trance state.

    Negative Symptom Correlation
Traumatic brain injury (TBI), trauma, toxicity, neuropathy, lethargy, some types of ADHD, learning disorders.

    Theta (4-7 Hz)

    Positive Function
Experience just before sleep or upon waking, allows the mind to move from a waking state to sleep, a creative state, healing, integration of mind and body, internalized thoughts, disassociation (protective during danger), deep meditative states, memory formation and consolidation, intuitive states, imagination and imagery, a dream-like state experience.

    Negative Symptom Correlation
Concentration problems, disassociation, fogginess, lack of clarity, inattention, impulsivity, learning disorders, emotional dysregulation, PTSD symptoms, ADHD symptoms, distractibility, cognitive decline, depression, and anxiety.

    Alpha (8-12 Hz)

    Positive Function
Allows brain flexibility and the ability to shift into an optimal performance state or flight or fight, but also to downshift into a relaxed and self-soothing state that is healing. Allows relaxation, meditative states, healing, inner calm, peacefulness, joy, open focus, and gratitude.

    Negative Symptom Correlation
Depression, fogginess, drowsy, a ‘heady’ anxiety, anxiety, ADHD symptoms, distractibility, an inability to be alone without noise, migraines, learning disorders, frequent worry, or a feeling of stuckness.

    Low Beta (12-15 Hz SMR)

    Positive Function
Relaxed and attentive state, physically still, focused, integrated, present, clarity, relaxed thinking, calmness, and alert.

    Negative Symptom Correlation
This range of brainwave is like a goldilocks rhythm and stabilizes the brain so we typically don’t see negative symptoms from this range but in the brainwaves above and below this range.

    Beta (15-20 Hz)

    Positive Function
Alert and awake, thinking, awareness of environment, performance, analytical, math, planning, and externally oriented.

    Negative Symptom Correlation
Anxiety, stressed, bruxism, muscle tension, hyperactive, impulsivity, irritability, sensitivities, light or poor sleep, and distracted.

    High Beta (20-35 Hz)

    Positive Function
Peak performance, cognitive processing, alertness, the ability to fight or flee, and hyperfocus.

    Negative Symptom Correlation
Overwhelm, anxiety, panic, OCD, ruminations, overthinking, worry, migraine, agitation, irritable, anger, hyperactivity, hypervigilance, poor sleep, emotional fatigue, physical fatigue, and stress.

  • qEEG is short for Quantitative Electroencephalogram, and it maps, records, and indicates where brain activity has higher or lower amplitude levels. Using this data, we can pinpoint strengths and weaknesses and help bring the amplitude levels back to normal. The qEEG machine records your brain activity with a cap, that has 19 areas of the brain that are recorded. Each electrode point corresponds to regions of the brain  (Pre-frontal, Frontal, Central Motor Strip, Parietal, Occipital, and Temporal Lobe areas). These electrode points record the electrical brain activity to help identify areas of the brain that are above or below the normal amplitude levels, ranging from 1-35 Hz. The qEEG is the initial test and takes about 20 minutes to record. The testing is divided into two 10-minute recordings. One is completed with the individual's eyes open, and the other recording is completed with the individual's eyes closed. To help your brain heal, we need to know what areas of the brain are most affected, which is conducted by mapping the brain, also known as qEEG or brain mapping.

  • Biofeedback is the technique used to help you gain more awareness of the physiological and neurochemical responses in your body. The goal is to train an individual to have control over some of the functions and responses in their body that they previously didn’t have control over. Sometimes, previously adaptive and functioning brainwaves can become maladaptive, and the goal is to bring these brainwaves back to an optimal state to meet an individual’s needs and goals. When doing neurofeedback training, you are hooked up to various types of amplifiers that receive information from your brain, which allows the brain to see itself so that it can begin to operate more effectively. These amplifiers might measure brainwaves, heart rate, muscle tension, or other functions. This information is then translated back to you and presented in a way you can understand through visual, auditory, or tactile feedback. For example, you might receive feedback on what is happening in your body through images on a television screen or sound in headphones. By watching or listening to feedback, an individual begins to train themselves to control the responses within their body. A therapist will help you through this process. They might also teach you how to use relaxation techniques or visualization to change your heart rate or muscle activity.
